Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ) is the subject of an ethics complaint after constituent Saily Avelenda resigned from her job as a senior vice president and assistant general counsel at Lakeland Bank. Frelinghuysen had contacted her employer through a handwritten note on a fundraising letter about her political activity for democratic super PAC NJ 11th For Change. Multiple calls and emails by Matter of Fact to both the Congressman’s congressional and campaign office have not been returned for comment.

Avelenda says that after being asked to explain her political involvement to the CEO, she chose to resign. The bank responded to the situation in a Facebook post saying, “each employee has the opportunity to support…the political process in the manner she or he desires.” Avelenda joins Soledad for a discussion on why she felt the need to leave and what she hopes others take away from her story when considering politics versus profession.
