As the political fallout of Brexit continues, David Rennie of “The Economist” says people in the United States are pessimistic about American politics.

“I think the country is genuinely very unhappy. I very rarely meet people who are enthusiastic about the choice they face this election,” Rennie says. “There is a real sense of despair that this is the choice people have ended up with and a real sense of wondering – I think beyond ‘why are we faced with a bad choice?’ – ‘is the system itself not working?’”

Rennie says this could be part of the reason for the rise of Donald Trump who is running as a Republican, but doesn’t hold some of the key, traditional conservative values, such as support for free trade. Instead, Rennie says, Trump seems to be playing off the European “strong man” image and it is working with voters.

“He is presenting himself as a strong man, and that draws on the European traditions of the savior strong man who will cut through the checks and balances.”

Part of Rennie’s analysis is the strong man model is appealing to those who have a growing feeling of a “us” versus “them” world. According to Rennie, that divisive feeling is becoming increasingly common among voters who seem to be disregarding fact checking.

“That kind of normal business of fact checking didn’t matter because it got into a tribal identity. Are you with us or against us? And if you are against us, we don’t believe a word that you say and that is part of Trump’s technique too. He uses that when the press fact checks him when they point out he’s contradicted himself in the space of a few days. Doesn’t bother his supporters.”
