As Republican nominee Donald Trump struggles to find a consistent message on immigration in the general election environment, Executive Director for the Center of Immigration Studies Mark Krikorian predicts the lack of a concrete plan could cost him voters’ trust.

“Immigration is the only reason that he is actually a presidential candidate successfully nominated by a party,” Krikorian says. “The hope was maybe Trump could be that person (who was tough on immigration) but he’s a sold out person before he proved that he was actually reliable.”

Immigration has been a major issue in politics for decades evoking strong opinions and emotions and wide perception of possible solutions. Krikorian says he wants the next president to focus on increasing border security, keeping undocumented immigrants from holding jobs and monitoring visa holders to ensure they leave when scheduled. However, he also says he doesn’t believe Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton can solve this problem.

“What the hypothetical next president would need to do, really it seems to be, is full perm of enforcement. Nothing but enforcement and he’s going to need Congress’ help because there’s some things that the president needs to do that isn’t being done and things – authorities that Congress has to give him.”

According to a 2015 Pew Report, 72 percent of Americans believe undocumented immigrants who meet certain requirements should have a way to stay legally in the country, whether through applying for citizenship or permanent residence. That belief was reported by 56 percent of Republicans and 80 percent of Democrats. A quarter (27 percent) of Republicans believe there should be a “national law enforcement effort to deport all immigrants here illegally.”
