Her beat is media, and is critical of those who work inside it.

Hadas Gold, a reporter for Politico’s “On Media” blog, is taking a critical look at media coverage in this election season. According to Gold, the media has failed to take Bernie Sanders’ candidacy seriously – as they did with Donald Trump. She’s even seen it in person.

“I’ve been on the trail and seen the press file areas versus Clinton or Trump and they are getting pretty empty on the Sanders trail and it’s because it takes a lot of money to send a reporter to a campaign event.”

Sanders won three of the five contests in May and tied with Hillary Clinton in Kentucky. Clinton is far ahead in the delegate count with 1768 of bound delegates compared to Sanders’ 1494 and that’s not counting the unpledged numbers. According to Gold, though Sanders is unlikely to win, his movement is a story worth telling.

But the media hasn’t. In terms of free media – newspapers, TV news, online sources – Sanders has only received $321 million, compared to Clinton’s $746 million. Both pale in comparison to Trump’s $1.9 billion.

On the GOP side, Gold says Trump is giving journalists a run for their money as they struggle to report his rapid fire comments fast enough without taking time to fact check she says. Sometimes, the truth has to take a backseat.

“That on the spot fact checking is difficult to be honest. Trump says so many things that are incorrect in a five-minute span that there’s a lot to digest there. While media getting better as it comes, journalist are saying, ‘we just have to put it out there.’”
