Indiana Governor Mike Pence could help Republican nominee Donald Trump unite a divided party at the Convention in Cleveland this week.

Trump announced the news via Twitter after initially canceling a scheduled news conference with his VP nominee in light of the deadly truck attack in Nice, France on Thursday night. The attack killed over 80 people during their Independence Day celebrations.

Carl Cannon, Washington Bureau Chief of RealClearPolitics and veteran journalist, says that choosing Pence can benefit Trump, characterizing Trump as a mainstream conservative.

“Pence is an evangelical Christian, beloved by the religious right and the base, the conservative social base of the republican party,” Cannon says. “This sends a message to Republicans. It’s okay, Pence has given me his input. It’s ok to vote for me if you are a social conservative.”

Cannon also says Pence fits Trump’s criteria of someone with experience. Elected governor in 2012, Pence also represented Indiana in the House for 12 years.

“To Trump, being a senator and standing around talking, that’s not experience. He’s an executive. Running a state? That’s experience.”

As governor, Pence led Indiana state legislatures in passing the second largest tax cut in Indiana history. However, some could question his conservative leadership record. His implementation of Obamacare, even with conservative modifications, was seen as a deviation from party values. Pence is also known for implementing a religious freedom act, allowing business owners to deny services to those in the LGBT community on the basis of religion, but then later revised the bill following public outcry.

Also, unlike former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Pence lacks name recognition among the general public. In a recent favorability poll, 86 percent of respondents indicated they were either undecided or had not heard enough to decide.
