Donald Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee, is tapping Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-North Dakota), a climate change skeptic, as an energy advisor. Trump himself has called global warming a hoax and an invention of the Chinese.

Cramer, a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has said the EPA uses fraudulent science to discuss climate change. He also supports the fracking industry. Although he is not a denier of climate change, he is skeptical of the human contribution, and says current global environmental initiatives with incremental change aren’t worth the cost to the economy. He says he has looked at undisputed studies claiming that if the US – and their entire pollution footprint – suddenly disappeared, by 2050 there the climate degree would only change by -.08 degrees.

“We have a deal with China that now until 2030 they get to increase their emissions, while the U.S. decreases, giving them a global advantage that does nothing to actually reduce the emissions going into the air in what is supposed to be a global problem.”

His advice for Trump? Making American energy more competitive by not punishing American energy companies with environmental rules and regulations.

Cramer says he will also advise Trump to look at the tax code for energy corporations and look for a simpler solution for tax deductions that will work for all energy industries – oil, coal, gas, wind, solar, etc.

Cramer, North Dakota’s only representative, recently endorsed Trump, saying he appreciates his “America First” attitude and his ability to create jobs. The congressman supports bilateral trade deals, instead of multi-national agreements such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership. He says he believes Trump will be able to renegotiate many of the trade deals the US has with foreign nations, finding better terms and holding countries to the terms.

Cramer has been asked to write a white paper for the business mogul on energy policy, but insists Trump will be crafting his own energy strategy. Trump is expected to expand on his energy ideas at a major petroleum conference in Bismarck, ND this week.

Check out our video for more of Fernando’s discussion with Rep. Cramer and his thoughts on tax policy, trade agreements, EPA regulation, and renewable energy.
