The Republican National Rules Committee has spent the past week in Cleveland crafting the details for their 2016 election platform in preparation for the Convention’s start on Monday. The platform has moved closer to the GOP base, and further right from nominee Donald Trump, particularly on social issues.

While the full Republican National Committee (RNC) platform has not yet been released, media have reported that it includes language opposing same-sex marriage and advocating for the nomination of judges that would repeal the marriage equality act. Additionally, the platform supports a provision that allows parents to send their lesbian, gay, queer or transgender children to “conversion therapy.” Additionally, the platform also supports regulating which bathrooms may be used by those who are transgender. Trump has taken somewhat more moderate views, saying North Carolina erred when they restricted transgendered people from using the bathroom where they feel most comfortable.

Rep. Sean Duffy of Wisconsin says that the media attention on these social policies shifts the focus from more important issues such as the economy, government power, national defense and immigration.

“These are issues that distract from bigger issues Americans care about.”

Overall, younger voters are more pro-marriage equality. Yet, Duffy says millennials are looking beyond the social issues. He believes their views on government and the economy are more cohesive with Republican values.

“They want the same opportunities that you and I have had, that our parents have had. They see a faltering economy with not as much opportunity and not as much ability for wage growth,” Duffy says. “They want sound rules, and sound regulation, but they don’t want too much of it. They want the government out of their lives, which means they fit more closely within the Republican party and the Libertarian wing of the Republican Party.”

The platform has officially approved Trump’s previous calls to build a wall along the Southern border states as an official Republican position. It also advocates for a Bible study elective in public schools and endorses Trump’s ban on Muslims.
