American schools are becoming increasingly segregated. In some districts it is worse than it was in the 1970’s. Nikole Hannah-Jones, an investigative reporter for New York Times Magazine, has focused her career on the racial inequality in education. She’s also a MacArthur Genius Award Winner, an achievement she gained in part, Hannah-Jones says, because of her enrollment in a majority-white school as a child. She sits down with Soledad O’Brien to discuss why she says the segregation in American schools is intentional and why it’s hurting the country’s future.
