As Democrats prepare for a Republican Majority in control of the House, Senate and White House, they’ll need to come up with new strategies to keep their agenda in play. Some are advocating an obstructionist approach, but it’s a dangerous strategy.

Sen. Joe Manchin, a moderate Democrat from West Virginia, says obstructionist politics could lead to a repeat of the 2016 election results. He’s also been meeting with President-elect Donald Trump and his team to discuss legislation vital to his constituents, including the Affordable Care Act. Recent data shows that the uninsured rate in West Virginia has fallen by 59 percent since the ACA was enacted in 2010.

As the new Vice Chair for the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee, a Minority leadership position on Capitol Hill, Manchin says he hopes to find a path for his party to negotiate successfully across the aisle. He joins Soledad to discuss why he has agreed to take on the role of a deal maker.
